As Assistant Commissioner, Evelyn Delgado is responsible for programs improving the health of all Texans. She provides leadership to a team of 400 dedicated staff, focused on improving the health of mothers, women of childbearing age, infants, children, and adolescents. Serving over 1.5 million Texans programs under her direction are expected to deliver over $800 million of preventive and direct safety net health services to the communities of Texas this year. Ms. Delgado oversees essential health and education programs including the WIC nutrition program that provides over $566 million of nutritional food benefits annually to 900,000 clients per month through a network of 2,500 grocer outlets, Her programs also include family planning, prenatal care, oral health, breast and cervical cancer, primary health care, children with special health care needs, newborn screening, Texas Health Steps, case management for children and pregnant women, newborn hearing screening, school vision and hearing screening, and school spinal screening. Title V Maternal and Child Health prevention initiatives address a full range of health concerns, including child obesity, infant mortality, prenatal care, and others. She is a member of the DSHS Executive Steering Committee on Disaster Preparedness charged with developing agency disaster response policies and systems related to health and medical special needs populations in Texas. Ms. Delgado has 29 years of management experience in the private and public sectors. She previously served as Assistant Deputy Commissioner of Long Term Care Regulatory at the Texas Department of Human Services, protecting the health and safety of 135,000 elderly and disabled citizens residing in 3,400 nursing homes and other long term care facilities throughout Texas. She has dedicated many years of service to her community through the United Way of Texas and other community organizations.
