Kathryn E. Peek, Ph.D., serves as associate professor, Department of Biomedical Engineering, UT M. D. Anderson Cancer Center and instructor, Department of Bioengineering, Rice University. Before joining M. D. Anderson in 2006, Peek served as research professor and director of the Institute for Women’s Health at Texas Woman’s University-Houston. She has also held faculty positions at the University of Texas-Houston Medical School and the University of Houston College of Optometry. Peek was named 1997 Distance Educator of the Year by the University Continuing Education Association for her work at UH. A life-long resident of Southeast Texas, Peek holds degrees from Lamar University (B.A., English), the University of Houston (M.S., biology), the University of Houston at Clear Lake (M.A., behavioral sciences), and the University of Texas-Houston Health Science Center (Ph.D., biomedical sciences). Peek serves on the Board of Directors of the Houston Area Women’s Center and the Advisory Boards for the Texas Institute for Health Policy Research, the CRG Medical Patient Safety Foundation, and the UH Women’s Studies Community Outreach Board. She is former president of the Association for Women in Science-Gulf Coast/Houston Chapter. In the past, Peek has chaired the Mayor’s Summit on Women and the Women’s Heart Health Committee of the American Heart Association. She has lectured extensively about gender and health issues throughout the country. In 2002, Peek co-founded the Texas Medical Center Women’s Health Network (TMC WHN). As the first president of the organization from 2002 to 2006, Peek served as scientific advisor for the Texas Legislature’s Women’s Health Caucus and represented Texas on the Women’s Health Alliance of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
