For over 20 years Dr. Paula O’Neill has been a dental/medical educator and faculty developer. Since 1996 she has been the Associate Dean for Educational Research and Professional Development at The University of Texas Houston Dental Branch (DB) at Houston. She is a professor in the Department of Diagnostic Sciences at the Dental Branch and an Adjunct Professor in the School of Health Information Sciences at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. In her role as associate dean, she has been responsible for the development and implementation of the Annual Faculty Development and Evaluation Plan to assist faculty in their professional development. In 1999 she initiated and developed an Orientation for New Faculty including a Formal Mentoring Program for faculty new to the DB. The Mentoring Program at the DB is supported by her publication “Faculty Mentoring Guide” now in its 2nd edition. The mentoring model she developed has received local, national and international recognition and is noted as a “Best Practice” by the American Dental Education Association. She has also guided the development and implementation of the Peer Review System at the Dental Branch. Dr. O’Neill has consulted internationally and nationally with over ninety health science institutions regarding faculty development including the mentoring of faculty. She has served on the editorial boards of two peer-reviewed journals; chaired two NIH study sections; and is the principal investigator for The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Summer Medical and Dental Education Program grant ($1,200,000 grant) to help under-represented and disadvantaged students gain admission to professional schools, and for the HRSA funded Hispanic Center of Excellence ($1,531,000) grant at the Dental Branch that seeks to provide training and enrichment experiences for Hispanic pre-entry, dental and faculty trainees.
